A recent tour of a fully electrified home in Champaign, Illinois, provided a firsthand look at how even century-old residences can be transformed into models of modern sustainability. The home belongs to Alex Long, co-founder of Build Equinox, who meticulously retrofitted his 1919 residence to prove that transitioning away from fossil fuels is both possible and deeply beneficial for older housing stock. By combining improved insulation and solar panels with the total removal of gas connections, Alex has created a real-world blueprint for decarbonization that prioritizes environmental responsibility alongside long-term financial savings.
The tour highlighted how the CERV2 works in tandem with Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat mini-splits and a heat pump water heater to maintain pristine indoor air quality, eliminating the pollutants and asthma triggers often associated with gas combustion. This project was showcased in collaboration with several advocacy groups to demonstrate how state programs like the Clean and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) are making healthy, all-electric living more accessible to every Illinois resident.
